GIRLS THE LIGHT: GIRLS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
The Girls Skills Development & Economic Empowerment Programme by White Heart Development Initiative, with support from Witness Africa, equipped 150 adolescent girls with practical, income-generating skills. The initiative focused on building self-reliance and financial independence by training participants in the production of everyday products and crafts that can serve as sustainable sources of income.
Programme Title: Girls Skills Development & Economic Empowerment Programme.
Context:
Limited access to economic opportunities continues to expose many adolescent girls to poverty and dependency. Equipping girls with practical and marketable skills is essential for promoting financial independence, reducing vulnerability, and enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Objective:
i To equip adolescent girls with practical, income-generating skills.
ii. To promote financial independence and self-reliance.
iii. To reduce economic vulnerability among girls.
iv. To encourage entrepreneurship and small-scale business development.
Participants: 150 adolescent girls from Dawakin Kudu, Nassarawa, Rimin Gado, Tarauni LGAs in Kano State.
Programme Structure:
The programme provided hands-on training sessions focused on practical production skills and entrepreneurship, marketing startegies and customer management.
Key components included:
Skill Acquisition Training:
Participants were trained in producing a variety of marketable products
Practical Demonstrations:
Step-by-step guidance to ensure understanding and skill mastery
Entrepreneurship Mindset:
Encouraging girls to turn acquired skills into income-generating ventures
Interactive Learning:
Opportunities for participants to practice and ask questions
Skills Acquired:
Participants were trained in the production of:
1. Hair shampoo
2. Hair cream
3. Body spray
4. Vaseline
5. Mentholatum
6. Turaren wuta (traditional incense)
7. Beadwork
Key Outcomes:
i. Increased practical and entrepreneurial skills among participants
II. mproved confidence in starting small-scale businesses
iii. Enhanced capacity for financial independence
iv. Reduced vulnerability to economic hardship
Impact:
