GIRLS THE LIGHT PROGRAM: MENSTRUAL HYGIENE & DIGINITY PHASE II

The Menstrual Health & Dignity Programme by White Heart Development Initiative was designed to address menstrual poverty and promote the well-being of adolescent girls. Through this initiative, 50 girls from Government Girls Upper Basic Secondary School Yusuf Mai Ulu Kundila received menstrual hygiene education and dignity kits to support their health, confidence, and consistent school attendance.

Programme Title: Menstrual Health & Dignity Programme

Context: Menstrual poverty remains a significant barrier to girls’ education, health, and self-esteem. Many adolescent girls lack access to accurate information and essential hygiene materials, which affects their ability to manage menstruation safely and confidently.

Objective:
To improve menstrual hygiene knowledge among adolescent girls
To provide access to essential menstrual and personal hygiene materials
To promote dignity, confidence, and school attendance during menstruation
To reduce stigma and misinformation surrounding menstrual health

Participants: 50 adolescent girls from Government Girls Upper Basic Secondary School Yusuf Mai Ulu Kundila, Kano State.

Programme Structure: The programme combined education with practical support to ensure lasting impact.

Key components included:
Menstrual Health Education: Sessions on menstrual hygiene management, reproductive health, and dispelling myths.

Dignity Kit Distribution: Each participant received a kit containing essential items to support personal hygiene.

Open Discussions: Safe spaces created for girls to ask questions and share experiences
Items Distributed (Dignity Kits):

Each girl received:
Sanitary pads
Toothpaste
Toothbrush
Shaving sticks
Roll-on deodorants

Key Outcomes:
1. Improved knowledge and understanding of menstrual health
2. Increased confidence in managing menstruation
3. Enhanced school participation and attendance
4. Reduced stigma and embarrassment associated with menstruation

Impact:
The Menstrual Health & Dignity Programme strengthened girls’ ability to manage their periods safely and with confidence. By addressing both education and access to hygiene materials, the initiative helped ensure that menstruation does not limit girls’ opportunities, allowing them to stay in school and live with dignity.
